A smile can bright up a dark room….only if you can flaunt your pearly whites. And according to a study, having whiter teeth makes you look more successful, more employable, more attractive and even five years younger. Here are eight simple tips for whiter teeth.
1. Maintain good oral hygiene
Good oral hygiene not only keeps your mouth healthy but also helps keep your teeth white. Plaque that sticks on and between your teeth can harbour bacteria can cause discolouration of your pearly whites. Brush at least twice a day. And don’t forget to floss once or twice a day preferably after dinner.
2. Use an electric or ultrasonic toothbrush
Electric and ultrasonic toothbrushes claim to regain the original white colour of your teeth without bleaching! By removing stains from food, coffee, etc., they restore the teeth to their natural colour. They also contain no chemicals or bleach to damage the enamel. These brushes also provide deep cleaning.
3. Watch your diet
Foods you eat may show their tell-signs on your teeth. Stay away from tooth-staining foods and drinks like red wine, colas, dark juices/curries, black tea, coffee, etc.  And if you do have them make it a habit to drink water after that.
4. Drink with a straw
Doing away with most of the beverages is easier said than done. Even if you can’t avoid drinking them you surely can avoid them contacting your teeth by sipping from a straw!
5. Eat crunchy fruits and vegetables
The abrasive quality of crunchy fruits and vegetables like apples, pears, carrots, etc. can help clean stains from your teeth. And surely an apple a day can help keep tooth stains at bay! Apple is a fibrous, crunchy fruit with natural cleansing and astringent properties. Go ahead and munch some, especially after you have your meal.
6. Increase your intake of dairy products
Dairy products like cheese and yoghurt contain minerals like calcium and phosphorus that can not only keep your teeth sparkling but also keep them free from cavities by remineralisation of tooth enamel.
7. Switch to a whitening toothpaste
There are a variety of whitening toothpastes available in the market. These products contain silica or micro-crystals that have abrasive properties and help scrub away stains from your teeth making them appear whiter.
8. Visit your dentist regularly
Whatever tips you choose to follow it is of utmost importance to visit your dentist regularly. Along with the routine check-up your dentist can remove stubborn tooth stains with scaling and other tooth whitening procedures.
